Activision revealed that two new Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock track packs are set to storm living rooms. Available today on XBLA/PSN is the Modern Metal pack, which includes Deftones’ Hole in the Earth, Avenged Sevenfold’s Almost Easy and Thrice’s The Arsonist. On St. Patrick’s Day, three songs from Celtic punk band Dropkick Murphys will become available for free.

Next incarnation of the popular music game franchise will feature both cooperative and competitive online modes, as well as wireless guitar controllers; Wii and PS3 editions now official.

On board a specially designed Guitar Hero rock bus in London today, RedOctane president and founder Kai Huang confirmed details about the third installment of the Guitar Hero game.

Huang announced the game’s platforms–as rumoured, it will indeed be coming to the Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 2, arriving in stores just before the end of year holidays. There will also be a Nintendo DS version of the series, which will arrive “early next year.”

The latest game will also boast new wireless controllers “so that fans can finally rock out in their living room and jump off their couches and do all that crazy rock star stuff.” There will also be a variety of colours and a new design for the guitar controllers, along with some higher-end options made to look and feel more like real guitars.

Like developer Harmonix’s recently announced Rock Band, Guitar Hero III will also feature strong online elements. There will be both cooperative and competitive online modes, along with extra downloadable content.

“We’ve got a lot of songs and artists still that we would love to have,” Huang commented. “In particular, we’ve been trying to get Metallica, AC/DC, and Led Zeppelin. So hopefully sometime in the near future, my wish and everybody’s wish will come true and we can get some of their music in the game.”

Activision Announces details on downloadable content for Guitar Hero II on the Xbox 360.

Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) today announced details surrounding downloadable content for Guitar Hero II™ on the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Through massive popular demand and feedback from the community message boards and forums, dedicated fans now have the opportunity to download nine songs from the original Guitar Hero™ through Xbox Live Marketplace® beginning today.

Fresh new songs and other exciting content will be available on a monthly basis, and the initial downloads will include favourite finger-numbing tracks such as:

Guitar Hero - Track Pack 1

* Bark at the Moon (as made famous by Ozzy Osbourne)
* Hey You (as made famous by The Exies)
* Ace of Spades (as made famous by Motorhead)

Guitar Hero - Track Pack 2

* Killer Queen (as made famous by Queen)
* Take It Off (as made famous by The Donnas)
* Frankenstein (as made famous by The Edger Winter Group)

Guitar Hero - Track Pack 3

* Higher Ground (as made famous by Red Hot Chili Peppers)
* Infected (as made famous by Bad Religion)

With all the tracks upgraded to the Guitar Hero II feature set, including co-op gameplay with lead, rhythm and bass guitar options, the songs will be available to download in packs of three, for 500 points per pack. In addition, fans will be able to assume the identity of their favourite Guitar Heroes with exclusivetheme packs available for 150 points, and gamer pics for 100 points, respectively.
